What are the advantages and disadvantages of a spike aerator versus a core aerator? Common sense tells me the core aerator would do a better job of aerating because it makes bigger holes but then the plugs make a bigger mess. Is that about it?

The spike type actually packs the ground while poking the hole because they don't remove any dirt. The plugger type removes the dirt to loosen the ground allowing air, fertilizer, to enter root area easier. Also the plugs left behind will crumble after awhile and these plugs also are a source of nutriant. All you can say about a spike type aerator is that it is better than nothing, budinohio. ....
